How Did Deon Do It?
posted (June 12, 2015)
So, Belize is in the driver's seat - and we would be in that position were it not for the consistent on field brilliance of Deon McCaulay. He scored two goals yesterday in Santo Domingo. The first goal in the 13th minute was an odd one; he shot a penalty kick, and the Dominican Goalkeeper blocked it - but the ball remained in play. No defender swooped into the box to help and McCauley had one of the easiest goals of his stellar career as a striker. He replayed it for us this morning at the Miami International airport:..

Deon McCauley, Scored 2 Goals
"I was fortunate that the ball came back to me and I ended up putting the ball in the net, but sometimes things like these happen in the game. You just have to stay focused and execute once the ball comes back to you."

Jules Vasquez
"Are you surprised no one from the Dominican Republic responded after the goal keeper block the ball?"

Deon McCauley, Scored 2 Goals
"Well I was surprised, but I think that it happens so fast that nobody couldn't react and nobody knew what would have happened. They didn't even know if the keeper would have made a save. So I think that that's why nobody reacted in time."

And while that one was an unusually open opportunity for McCauley - his second goal that sealed the match in the 87th minute was a masterpiece - as McCualey confounded the Dominican goalkeeper and his defender. He told us it's one of his finest:..

Deon McCauley, Scored 2 Goals
"When I stopped the ball they thought that I would have finished one touch and that was what threw them off. After that it's just instinct and my instinct was telling me to hold the ball a little bit longer and try to beat off the defender and the keeper and it worked out perfectly for me. So, I was able to put the ball in the empty. That's one of the best finishes you'll see especially with the condition of the field."
