The By-Election Candidates: Sabal Vs Pawpa
posted (July 8, 2015)

And while those were all the additional political characters on the ground who were zoned in on this single division, in the foreground were the candidates: Frank Pawpa Mena for the UDP and Anthony Sabal for the PUP.

Today, Courtney Weatherburne spoke with both of them:…

Frank "Papa" Mena, UDP Candidate

"Well the thing the work, the work well. Early on the scratch and so but everything tighten up and the thing the work well."

Anthony Sabal, PUP Candidate

"The machinery is well oiled. If you notice we have gotten support from north, south, east and west. Bi-election is very important and yes we're very confident and it's working."

Frank "Papa" Mena, UDP Candidate

"The people energised. As I tell them it's one love. Sometimes things just get out of hand, you see something you get pushed to the edge - but we got that under control. The energy is up! The energy is up! And this is what it is."

Anthony Sabal, PUP Candidate

"At the end of the day I tell my people whether you are PUP or UDP we'll be living together in Dangriga. And therefore they have to be a certain measure of respect for each other. We share different philosophies, we belong to different political parties. At the end of the day this will be over and we'll still be here. Some areas are more exciting than others and for the rest it's pretty calm and our voters are coming out and our people are bringing out the voters."

Frank "Papa" Mena, UDP Candidate

"Many times we look on things fly pass we and we no get a chance to defend or even reason to get it. This here time we got an opportunity to make it stop at we because I am no push over. I am nobody puppet or so and I will defend my people and I've been doing that in and out of this. It's important for us to ensure we deliver this so we can get our cut of this you understand? My people deserve it, we deserve it. We had a PUP representative here that resign, nothing gone on, nothing gone on. You think that my people so off track that they will put another one for nothing to go on again?"

Courtney Weatherburne

"Everyone is excited yes but how about the anxiety and of course the fear of the outcome. I'm sure it must be a bit troubling right to think about the outcome?"

Anthony Sabal, PUP Candidate

"Not really. The shirt says it best, power belongs to the people and so it's the people that make it final decision. It's the job of the politician to convince then. But at the end of the day, it's the people who will make that decision. So for me it's perhaps because my previous career - the stress level. It's not stressful, it's okay and it's something you have to learn to live with and deal with. And with people it's always fascinating and interesting when we deal with our Belizeans."

And when we come back, we'll tell you why Political rivals Monchie and Gapi went at it in Dangriga.
