Hon. Omar Almost Run Over
posted (July 9, 2015)
And one more accident which didn't get reported or make it into that story involved Cayo North Representative Omar Figueroa. We saw him limping slightly on Front Street yesterday - and found out that he was almost run over. Mayor of Dangriga Francis Humphreys witnessed the accident and was irate when we spoke to him yesterday afternoon:..

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"See that "No Entry" sign there. That was moved a side by a van for the PUPs. The van backed up right along Front Street here towards the north. Dr. Figueroa and his companion were walking on the right-hand side of the street. The vehicle backed into him and he was saved by his companion who pulled him out of the way."

Hon. Omar Figueroa, UDP Rep - Cayo North
"Well I didn't see it coming. I was walking down going towards my truck and the vehicle hit me from behind. I just heard Oscar say watch out and he pulled me out and I think that if he didn't pulled me out, the knock would have thrown me forward and it could have been a little bit worse. But I am okay."

Jules Vasquez
"Is this an accident Omar?"

Hon. Omar Figueroa, UDP Rep - Cayo North
"I didn't see it. I got hit from behind."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"But when you have a vehicle literally running over a Minister of Government for no other reason than..."

Jules Vasquez
"But it's just an accident man. A regrettable one."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"Let the law run its course. Let the law say it was a justifiable accident, because I am sure Dr. Figueroa is going to take action and I will be a material witness for him. This is out of order man."

Jules Vasquez
"But can't it just be chalked up to election day craziness?"

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"No, no. That sort of incident never happens in cultural capital. But from earlier this morning there were a whole bunch of PUPs over there making a ruckus, playing loud music, hurling insults. This is part and parcel of as far as I am concern, of a behavior that we do not have in our town at all. This is the first time I am witnessing this kind of mob behavior."

Jules Vasquez
"But Mayor, every polling station I've been to today has some kind of confrontation or stand-off. Is it that so many outsiders have been brought here?"

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"Exactly."

Jules Vasquez
"But it goes both ways."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"Hell no."

Jules Vasquez
"But the UDP has a lot of outsiders."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"I don't care. The outsiders who were brought in by the PUP are indisputably those who provoke that kind of nonsense."

Jules Vasquez
"The UDP of the past 10 years or so has the reputation of being the muscle party, the macho party. UDP don't cry - UDP make them cry. But it sounds like UDP is crying."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"No. That's your interpretation. Let me say it again perfectly clear, we have a standard of behavior and comportment that is like saints against the demons that were brought in here today."

Jules Vasquez
"That's very strong language."

Francis Humphreys, Mayor - Dangriga
"Of course it is and it is the fact of the matter."

At the end of the day, of 6275 voters, 3704 came out - a total turnout of 59.52% - down five percentage points from the 64% turnout in that division in the 2012 general elections.
