posted (July 23, 2015)
A Team of Customs personnel, police officers from the Special Patrol Unit, and members of Belize Defense Force, made 2 major contraband busts today at the Belize Mexico Border in the Orange Walk District. It is believed that the illegal items originated from shops and stores in the Mexican community of San Francisco Botes, which is right across the Rio Hondo River.

Acting on information received the law enforcement team visited a an abandoned house in San Victor Village where they discovered about 35 cases of beer, 35 cases of soft drinks, several sacks of assorted vegetables, about 300 sheets of zinc roofing among other items. No one was in the area and so the contraband goods were unloaded and then sent to be destroyed.

Right as the team was transporting the goods, the received intelligence of another contraband operation being carried out. They then set out and intercepted a boat on the river, which smugglers were trying to transport a large cargo of cabbage. The contrabandists escaped, but the vegetables were confiscated.

The Customs Department does not have a value of the items at this time, but the figure is in the thousands. San Victor village is known as one of the largest hubs for contraband.
