Bishop Blesses Expedition
posted (August 14, 2015)
Of course, that refers to earthly contingencies - the Bishop of the Catholic Church did his best to take care of the divine ones today. Bishop Dorick Wright, was invited to bless the expedition at the departure point in Barranco, but his health doesn't allow him to make such an arduous trek. So, instead of doing the blessing on site, he invited BTV member Orlando De La Fuente to his office in Belize City so that he could pray for the Belizeans going on the trip. We dropped by and spoke with the Bishop to see if he supports those going. Here's what he said:

Orlando De La Fuente, member - BTV
"Bishop Wright was once posted in Orange Walk and so he has spoken over the last few weeks, but I was not aware that his health was deteriorated so much and so he agreed that he will say a prayer for us and blessed this expedition that he will not be able to make the expedition himself physically. That's what we were here to do this morning. I was here to receive the Bishop blessing on behalf of the Belize Territorial Volunteers and it means a lot to us that he did this and he took the time to do it."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir, had your health not bean failing, would you have taken the trip to Sarstoon Island?"

Bishop Dorick Wright - Leader, Catholic Churches In Belize
"I am not certain. It would have depended on a whole lot of things and especially appointments and so on. I am not certain what I would have done at a time. It's like asking me if I were a girl, I would have become a nun. I don't know. So I am not certain whether I would have done at that time."

"What is your position on those who are going on that trip?"

Bishop Dorick Wright
"I think it's good for them to make it known to others that this is our country and we have a right to be there, but then I ask also to be careful. Let us pray that nobody be hurt. Let us pray that nobody does something wrong that will trigger anything that would be not very sensible and irresponsible."

So, since the Guatemalans were aggressive towards the BTV's scouting team on Tuesday morning, they've changed the plans slightly. Today, Orlando De La Fuente explained what's supposed to take place on the entire excursion:

Orlando De La Fuente, member - BTV
"It's important that the expedition departs on time. For those coming by bus, if you will be in PG, our transport will depart PG by 8, the latest. We should be in Barranco by 9 and we are expecting 9:30 departure from Barranco to the sand bar. It's about 20 minutes away. The expeditioneers need to know that they will get wet. They will be at a sand bar. It's about ankle deep, it's not mud. When Wil and I escorted the island there was no area that we could find an adequate area to disembarked. It's all mangrove and swamps. The sand bar is right in front of the island itself and its going to be better. Logistically, it's going to be safer for the entire group to disembarked at the sand bar inform of Sarstoon Island. It's a little north in front. So it actually deeper in Belize territory."

"What your position on Lisa Shoman saying she will go on this expedition?"

Orlando De La Fuente, member - BTV
"I am happy that Senator Lisa Shoman has decided to join the expedition and we welcome her presence. I think it means a lot to the expedition. It lends some more credence and I wish other political leaders would have the fortitude to join the expedition also."
