posted (August 19, 2015)
For years, Belize had been left out of the CONCACAF Champions League – because we never had a suitable stadium. But last night finally the prestigious tournament went to the FFB Stadium in Belmopan. The Gallos Blancos de Querétaro from the top Mexican League went into the Capital looking for a victory. But, Cayo's Verdes held their own against the Mexicans, playing to a nil – nil draw. They were led by goalkeeper Benito Morreira who made six saves to help Verdes FC earn a historic point in the draw. After the game, the Mexican Coach was salty about the defeat and the officiating:..

Translated from Spanish to English..

"What did you like of your team? Do you think your team did good or bad?"

Victor Manuel Vucetich - Queretaro's Coach

"Truly my team didn't play well tonight, hence, the result is not too good, we are very angry, a believe the referring was fatal , allowing the goalkeeper to have six intervention/pause during the game, at no moment there was a situation which merited for the assistance to enter the field. Concacaf should pay more attention to the fair play factor, we need to watch this more close in CONCACAF because tonight it was a joke no doubt. It is funny to notice that the stretcher entered many times, but at no time did they take any player out, these player would walk out, and immediately run back in - this is sad, no."

Walter Salazar - Verdes Head Coach

"The fans are that twelfth player in match. It's an incredible way in which the fans can help a team, today when my team need that extra energy in the last fifteen minutes, the fans were there to inject such energy in them. It was great to see the fans coming out in great numbers; after all today Verdes was not just the team from San Ignacio, or the team from Benque, today Verdes was a representative for the entire nation of Belize. The result of the match was not the best one, but nonetheless a good one, since were up a strong team, such as Querretaro, a team that has made history in their competition, coming from a very professional football as the Mexican league is."

"Your forwards, all of us in this room would agree on one thing, your two forwards tonight, and we are talking about Jarret Davis and Deon McCauley, they did not communicate with each other, what can you say about it? My second question is, even though the score is not against us, but isn't in favor as well, what can you tell us about it?"

Walter Salazar - Verdes Head Coach

"In reality the Verdes team has suffered a lot of injures, especially in our forward, I don't know if it is of your knowledge that Tores and Paco Thomas, a surgery was done on Paco Thomas' knee. In the case of Jarret and Deon McCauley, because they are the two players with the most experience on the team, in the forward position. Up to yesterday, both Davis and McCauley received therapy for their injuries. Every time these two players got a break to make a play they seem tired and unable to reach the distance desired. They no doubt need more team practice in ordered to have played much better as group."

"I would like to answer you the second question, sometimes football is a bit unfair, we would have first of all understand the attitude of Querétaro's head coach. My team played a man's game tonight, a game with great heart tonight, yes, we needed more touch on the ball, and more mobility, nonetheless, we must agree that the score we got today is historical. Whenever we go back to play Querétaro in their home, it won't be anyway easy, the altitude will play a major factor, with all that we'll continue working hard and do our greatest effort going forward."

Reporter

"Give a synopsis of the game, and what you liked or didn't liked."

Edgar Hernandez - Querétaro Player

"Well we go not too happy because of the result and the attitude of the team, we had a lot of opportunities but were not convincing, and we had various opportunities but did not capitalize on them - that was the difference."

Reporter

"What were expectations of your opponent?"

Edgar Hernandez - Querétaro Player

"Well it was a team that did not stop running, a team who would want to win because of the importance of a victory here at home for them. They might not be the best technically, yet they never quit running."

Reporter

"What can you tell us about the game tonight?"

Benito Moreira - Verdes Goalkeeper

"We had trained all week to try obtain the best result possible, even though we did not get our prime objective, no doubt we will continue working hard to get it."

And while our Fredy Cantiliano did those interviews in Spanish, he also spoke to two of the Verdes players in English:…

Shamir Pacheco - Verdes

"Yeah it was a nice game, this game was dedicated to all the fans; all the fans that were here at the stadium, dedicated to you guys."

Reporter

"What was the game plan for tonight?"

Shamir Pacheco - Verdes

"Well the game plan was that we were trying to counter Querretaro but they were well positioned. We try our best, we had some quite opportunity but never scored. It was a nice game."

Reporter

"At some point we saw the team a bit tired. Could you tell us about it? Why was it happening?"

Shamir Pacheco - Verdes

"Well actually the first half we were penetrating a little bit more; but I think the second half those guys were pressuring us more. They were trying to go on the wings. And when a team is pressuring you, it's kind of difficult, worst a professional team like Querretaro."

Reporter

"At some point we saw that you had like 4 forwards, was that part of the plan?"

Shamir Pacheco - Verdes

"Yeah, well actually we were trying to push whenever we had the ball; like counter. We know that they are not too fast, we were watching the videos and everything, they are not too fast. But actually with the 4 forwards, as we lose the ball we had to come back again because they had too much people in the middle. So they had to drag back."

Reporter

"After many plays and yet we go on a scoreless match, talk to me about it."

Jarret Davis - Verdes, Forward

"Well that's how football play, we get opportunity and we don't capitalize sometime but we just have to sharpening up on that for the next game; because we see that we can beat this team but we just have to capitalize. We get our break, we get some break we should have put away but that's the way football go."

Reporter

"Tonight we saw plays where you had Deon McCauley open but no ball was passed to him and vice versa. Is there any conflict internally going on? Or are you all happy to play with each other?"

Jarret Davis - Verdes, Forward

"Well most definitely we happy to play with each other but then it's just; only one person you could pass the ball to and once I see Deon open, majority of the time Deon is my first option because he is a goal scorer but once I see a next play then I push it to the easier play."

Reporter

"In the very beginning we saw the team a bit lost on the field. Do you think you need any more matches here on this field?"

Jarret Davis - Verdes, Forward

"Well not necessarily. The first 15 minutes of the game we the try not giving up a goal; so I don't think we were lost, we were just playing more defensive to get accustomed to the game so we could control the game after that and I think we did great. We will evaluate ourselves and do much better next game."

Reporter

"So we can expect a goal next game in Querretaro?"

Jarret Davis - Verdes, Forward

"Most definitely, I don't think Verdes usually go 2 game without score a goal so; most definitely we look to shock the fans across at Mexico."

And they should feel confident, after all, both teams left Belmopan with a point each. But they now head back to Mexico on September 17th to play Queretero on their home field in Central Mexico.
