Losing Faith?
posted (September 16, 2015)

Since August 28 th when we broke the story on the problems at Faith Nazarene Primary School, parents and teachers have been complaining about the leadership of Principal Policarpia Pech. There have been several meetings with teachers and parents but still no compromise, no agreement has been finalized and today about 20 parents staged an actual protest. We travelled west and here's what we saw

Courtney Weatherburne Reporting….

It might seem like a regular school day at Faith Nazarene with the kids in their pleated reddish brown uniforms eating their snacks during break time. But instead of running around the compound and playing, they all huddled together near the small snack shop – staring in bewilderment at the boisterous crowd of parents who had gathered outside.

The parents stood under a tent outside the school grounds chanting loudly and demanding what they have been demanding for weeks.

Crowd Chanting

"We want a change, we want change."

"Nececitamos un cambio."

If chants were not enough, there was a caricature of Principal Pech and placards with angry messages lining the school fence.

The parents even made a report card reflecting in their view, Pech's very poor performance as principal of the school.

And over the past 3 weeks, the school has become the meeting grounds for teachers, school administrators and Education officials trying to solve this issue.

And while management is in negotiations – most of the kids are missing out on school

Some passed us giggling and quite contended, while these girls took in the spectacle over an ice cup and snacks.

It's another free day for these kids but for the parents – it's far from it.

Maria Castillo - Mother

"We are here protesting because it hurts me to keep my child at my house. My daughter is in standard 6 right now and with this principal, she is keeping a lot from my child. So how she expects for my child to pass her PSE next year and that hurts me. She don't care, she has her education. My kid needs her education, so we need her step down."

Courtney Weatherburne

"So you stand firm saying that you want Ms. Pech to be removed? And you will continue this protest until she is?"

Maria Castillo - Mother

"Yes, we want her to move from here. We don't care if they send her somewhere else; the problem is we don't want her here in the school."

And until that happens – the parents will not send their kids to school.

Maria Castillo - Mother

"We are not sending our kids. Because right now if she had stepped down, if she had stepped down before school had opened or the first day of school; she step down and get off this compound it would have been much easier. Because then the kids will be happy, everybody will be happy, we wouldn't have this problem."

David Simpson - Father

"The teachers and the principal are having their own discontent and that will affect the teachers in teaching my kid. I am an ex teacher, I taught for 9 years, I've been to BELCAS and a teacher who is not content will never share the message to his student because it's going to be a personal vendetta against your kid."

Lily Rodas - Mother

"Mr. Sheppard is the general manager of Faith Nazarene so we hope that he is able to come and meet with all the parents and that is what we want. Because the quicker they solve this problem, the better it is going to be for our kids because they are 3 weeks out of school and we are just giving them reading and spelling; because we don't know what else the teachers are giving."

Ida Hope - Mother

"As parents we are frustrated, we are back and front and there is no solution to this."
