Keyren Applies For Bail; Judge Want Mental Health Evaluation
posted (September 18, 2015)
Keyren Tzib, the Coast Guard officer accused of killing her common-law husband, formally applied to the Supreme Court for bail today - but the judge said that first he needs a psychiatric assessment.

That hearing took place this morning at around 11:15 before Justice Troadio Gonzalez. His court room was packed with relatives, friends, and on-lookers who wanted to observe for themselves whether or not she would be granted bail.

Crown Counsel Sheneiza Smith strongly objected to bail. She asserted that the prosecution has a very strong case against Tzib who is accused of fatally stabbing Thytis Blancaneaux.

After hearing her submissions Justice Gonzalez was concerned if Tzib was getting the medical treatment she needed and if a proper assessment of her mental health had been done. It was at that point that her attorney, Mayor Darrell Bradley, interjected that the kind of treatment that she needs is not readily available in the prison. He further submitted that one his grounds for getting bail for Tzib is a report from a psychiatric nurse.

That report was handed over to the judge who was not convinced of her findings, and he ordered that the Prison's medical officers need to explain what kind of treatment that Tzib has been receiving.

He also ordered a psychiatric evaluation, and he adjourned the bail hearing untilSeptember 25, where he expects to make a more informed judgement.
