Mother Runs Off Road, Her Eight Year Old Daughter Dies
posted (September 22, 2015)
Tonight, 32 year old Evelyn Kuylen is recovering from minor injuries she received after she ran off the Western Highway yesterday in a Mazda Tribute. But, what she can't recover from is that her 8 year old daughter, Kaylene died as a result of the injuries she received in that accident. Just a short time earlier, Evelyn - who is a clerk at the social security board - and her three children, aged 9, 8 and 2 years old were in the 21st September Parade in Belmopan. The kids were aboard the Social Security float throwing out sweets. They were heading back home to Benque Viejo from that happy outing when the accident happened at 2:30. I visited the devastated mother Evelyn Kuylen at her home in Benque Viejo today:

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
8 year old Kaylene Mai sometimes shared this room with her siblings and her mother

But now this room is cold and empty with her oversized casket lying on the bed she once slept on.

Little Kaylene died in an accident on the Benque road on Independence Day.

Her mother, Eveleyn Kuylen was driving Kaylene and her 2 other kids back home to Benque from the Independence Day Parade when Kuylen lost control of the vehicle and flipped several times.

Kuylen was trapped inside while her 3 kids were flung unto the side of the road.

The 2 year old baby girl and the 9 year old boy survived but Kaylene didn't make it.

Voice of: Evelyn Kuylen, Mother of Deceased
"The car started to travel from the back wheel from the driver's side and started to swerve from side to side on the way and I couldn't controlled it. I lost control and it started to flip."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So how many times did the vehicle flipped?"

Evelyn Kuylen, Mother of Deceased
"I don't recall. It was several times."

Courtney Weatherburne
"And you were telling me before you were trapped in the vehicle and you were watching your kids. Talk to us about that?"

Evelyn Kuylen, Mother of Deceased
"I was confused and I am still confused as to how the vehicle spin. I just know that I watched my kids on the roadside and I was trapped inside the vehicle, then a taxi was behind actually coming to Benque and they assisted me. One of them broke the windshield from the front so I could come out and as I come out I started to shout for help. A taxi driver helped me, took my kids to the hospital along with a friend of mine and I ask the nurse and the doctor to render assistance to my daughter, because she was the one that was in critical condition. About 10-15 minutes after that she passed away."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Tell us about the injuries that you received and how you are coping with this tragedy?"

Evelyn Kuylen, Mother of Deceased
"I received injurie to my left hand and I have a little pain to my neck and my lower back and my left foot, but that pain is nothing to what I am feeling right now for losing my daughter."

Evelyn's 9 year old son received injuries to his face which had to be stitched up, while her two year old daughter didn't suffer any major injuries. And while she says her rear wheel had a mechanical failure, Police say the curve between miles 68 and 69 is extremely dangerous and it claimed the life of another driver 13 months ago. The driving public is being asked to be very careful on this stretch of road.
