Dean Street Drain’s Deficiency
posted (September 24, 2015)
And, in a much lower tax bracket on the southside in the Mesopotamia division, we remain concerned about our neighbors on lower Dean Street where it just has to drizzle - and the streets get flooded for days. The chronic and acute drainage problem is a nuisance to residents, and a serious inconvenience to the many pedestrians and school children who have to wade through the waters to get to work and school. It's a problem that's been going on for years, and it only got worse when they cemented the street. Today we asked the mayor what can be done for the denizens of Dean Street and he gave us a lesson in hydraulics:..

Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City
"Well in relation to one of things that we are seeing not only on Dean Street is that our perennial problem and this is kind of a city council issue is one that we have not and this is over the years, put sufficient focus on effective drainage works. if you can see one of the things that we have done in appropriating the BML staff is to ensure that they are full time crews that they were draining on a 24 hour basis, so that you will see certain persons, of course they can't dig every drain everyday but we have a shift in terms of location going around. We monitor hot spot areas for example after these recent rains. We did inspections along a Freetown Road, along a Queen Street along Hydes Lane. I didn't do an inspection along Dean Street, but this is an area which I can look at but one of the things that we have said is that we will always have water with us but one of the things that we want to do is to ensure that we have a reasonably quick run off time. So that the drainage function, the street itself function. If you notice whenever we did the most of the concrete streets, they are on a one 1 inch pivot so that the street itself serves as a drain by driving water off the side."
