PM Barrow Discusses Bar Association Slapdown
posted (October 16, 2015)
Yesterday we told you about the Bar Association - and how the CCJ refused its application to render a judgment on the eighth amendment, even though both sides in the case, namely the Government and the Ashcroft Alliance had already reached a settlement. Today the Prime Minister said it was an ill conceived move by what he calls the PUP Bar:...

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"There are good lawyers in the Bar Association. There are good lawyers what I am oblige to describe as the PUP Bar Association and they really ought to have known better. If you say that you would wish some sort of a final determination as to the constitutionality of the 8th amendment and this basic structure doctrine - there is another way to go about it. They themselves admitted that they've also have their heads handed to them with respect to the challenge before the Court of Appeal which reaffirm that the law of Belize does not include this basic structure doctrine. They will appeal that and they will have a chance at that point to get the CCJ to make a final pronouncement. They ought to have waited on that. It was I think quixotic, it was adventurist and unrealistic in the extreme and I have to feel then that politics was involved."
