PUP Scoffs At EIU Election Prediction
posted (November 2, 2015)

Courtenay also commented on a report which came out last week from the Economist Intelligence Unit – a product of the UK Based Economist Magazine – one of the most respected weekly magazines in the world. Under the heading "Election Watch", the EIU predicts that the UDP will win the general election. The report says, quote, "We expect that Mr. Barrow will win a comfortable majority of seats and a third consecutive term." That comfortable prediction has rankled the PUP and today Courtney says their internal polls show differently than what he calls the EIU's assumption:…

Eamon Courtenay - Former PUP Foreign Minister

"When one looks at that article, one has to take it with a grain of salt or perhaps a lump of salt. First of all it was not based on a poll. When you read it you will see that they simply are making certain; in their words, assumptions. I don't think that anyone is going to give much credibility to an article that seeks to predict the outcome of a general election on the basis of an assumption. Our internal polls are showing that the momentum certainly on our side."

"We are seeing and we continue to see areas and let me give you a specific example, Caribbean Shores. Which everybody was saying Darrell will win that easy. The polls are indicating that, that seat in play that Kareem is seriously on the move and that is going to be decided on Election Day."

"There are others, I will give you another example, Dangriga is one were people had felt Pawpa Mena was just elected, therefore he has the edge with him. The numbers are showing that our candidate there, Sabal, is absolutely in a race; neck and neck and again it is going to be organisation on the day. We see the momentum moving towards us, we think the article by the economist is entertaining and nothing more than that."

Both the UDP and the PUP have done polls, but neither has released the findings.
