Protecting Intellectual Property
posted (November 2, 2015)

The World Intellectual Property Rights Organization, is in Belize to help law enforcement and the judiciary learn how to prosecute intellectual property rights violations. Now that may sound arcane, but violating someone's intellectual property might be as simple as ripping song a from the internet. We found out more today:…

Louise Van Gruden - World Intellectual Property Organization

"We are confronted globally with escalation of counterfeiting and piracy and these are really challenges which we should address because they also have a negative impact not only economically but on health and safety."

Candice Westby Fisher - Deputy Registrar of Intellectual Property

"All over the world there is an issue with the enforcement of intellectual property rights and the use of these rights without permission and she gave the example of 8 out of 10 young people downloading music without permission. What happens is that our laws that you can works for your use within certain parameters; so if it's for educationally purposes, if it's reporting for the news you can sample a part of that work and you can use that work; otherwise you would have to get a license from the copyright holder. You would have to get a license from the author of a book or the person who wrote a song for example, you would have to get license. And what we have is management organizations that artist sign up to and they are the ones who will mainly be responsible for providing those licenses."

Today was the session for law enforcement, and tomorrow will be for the judiciary.
