Expert: Caribbean Has Appetite For Internet
posted (November 2, 2015)

CARIBNOG – it may sound like some strange Caribbean version of eggnog, but actually it's the Caribbean Network Operators Group. They are holding their tenth regional meeting in Belize – which is also where they held their sixth meeting. Today, the program director told us that they are looking at a changing landscape with the use of internet:..

Steven Lee - Programme Director, CARIBNOG

"The whole internet industry and community have developed and moved on since we're here 2 years ago. At that point in time we had just announced plans to establish an internet exchange point in Belize. Since then the agreement to cause that to happen was done earlier this year and just the whole internet landscape has changed significantly, more services becoming available in the Caribbean region. The appetite from users are changing so with the increase changes in the landscape and a deeper relationship with the public utilities commission we thought it would be appropriate to come back; later this week we want to get some feedback and updates from those who were at the first CARIBNOG meeting to see where they are two years down."

"One thing that we do need to pay a little bit more attention to and to accelerate is our collaboration across the whole region and our leveraging of the resources that we do have; human resource well as just straight physical infrastructure. We have a lot of fibre, we have a lot of wireless leverage that for the whole communities benefit. So that is one of the focus areas of CARIBNOG; creating the community around the opportunity and leverage in it."

The meeting is being facilitated by the Public Utilities Commission.
