Battered Woman Viola Pook Will Get Early Release
posted (November 2, 2015)

Last week Thursday, we told you how 57 year-old Viola Pook was sentenced to 8 years in jail after she pleaded guilty in her retrial. Well, the court has done the math, and because she has spent extensive time in jail while this case is being dealt with, she will only have to spend approximately 2 more years in jail.

That's because she has spent 2 years on remand while she awaited trail, and an additional 4 years while she waited for her case to be appealed. Justice Lucas, after being given all the information, deducted 6 years and 10 months, so depending on how the authorities at the Prison calculate her time, she will spend no more than 2 years.

On New Year's Eve in 2008, she threw kerosene on her common-law husband, Orlando Vasquez, and set him on fire. She was convicted in 2011, and she was sentenced to life in prison for murder. The Court of Appeal quashed that conviction based on the fact that she was a battered woman who suffered domestic abuse at the hands of her deceased common-law husband.
