VIP Says it Will Challenge Election Outcome
posted (November 9, 2015)
Last week, we showed you our interview with the Chief Elections Officer, as she discussed why the 31 constituencies were not re-districted for proportionality before the elections. Well, the Political Party, VIP, and the Souther Coalition For Equal Political Representation and Development is taking the Elections and Boundaries Commission to Court.

A release from the VIP says that their attorney, Hubert Elrington, will get an opportunity to make their case in the Supreme Court on December 7.

Their original claim form says that they are seeking to have the court declare that the Commission must comply with the Constitution, that the 31 electoral divisions be altered or re-divided, and that the General Elections - which happened last week Wednesday - be postponed until the Commission complies with Section 90 of the Constitution.

But, the elections have happened already, so the court cannot grant a relief which is not available. That would suggest that the lawsuit may already be crippled, but, the VIP says that this issue will be the first order of business at the December 7th hearing.

Finally, the VIP notes that they have lodged a complaint with the OAS Observer mission which should form part of the report on Belize's General Elections.
