Cubans Caught In Legal Limbo Held In Bze Prison
posted (December 1, 2015)
Back in August, we told you about 20+ Cubans who were caught illegally in Belize. They were suspected of being part of a human trafficking movement through this country with their final destination being America. Well, right now, they remain on lockdown where is probably the only place they can be because they're caught in a legal limbo where they can't go back home, and they can't be set free.

We understand from sources that the number has increased to 30, and they're all waiting on lockdown for the Government to decide what to do with them. So, why can't they go home? Well, informed observers tell us that Cuba has specific laws prohibiting illegal exits from the country without proper documentation, and once they do that… they are considered by their Government as "persona non-grata", and they can't go back to their country for another 8 years.

So, while the Immigration Department would simply want to ship them home, it can't do that. We understand also that these Cubans do not want to go back home. So, because there is nowhere to keep them, the Prison has them held, but that cannot be a long-term fix.

There is some talk of trying to seek asylum for them in Belize, but because they came here illegally, they don't qualify under the law through the normal route. So, that's where it is right now, they remain in jail for no other reason than that the state has nowhere to put them at this time.
