But even after "El Espanol" the cigarettes keep flowing across from Belize to Mexico.
Another Mexican media outlet is reporting that a cargo truck with over 4.6 Million individual cigarettes was seized by the Mexican federal police in the town of Huay-Pix - which is not far from Chetumal on the road to Cancun. The Mexican media is reporting that the cargo came from the Corozal Commercial Free Zone.
The truck came to the attention of police after the driver was reportedly swerving across the road. The Police caught up with the Truck when the driver pulled into a gas station.
By that time, the driver had bailed and run off, leaving the contraband cargo to police. They found 461 cases of cigarettes of various brands which breaks down into 4 million 610 thousand cigarettes - all allegedly smuggled out of the Corozal Free Zone. The truck was secured and taken to the Federal Police Station.
Local sources have told us that Belize has taken over form Panama as the lead source for contraband cigarettes in the region. The cigarettes - dozens of containers - are imported legally into Belize from the far east, and from there smuggled into Mexico.
