Youths Who Said Yes To Excellence

On the evening news, you often hear of youths being charged for crimes. Very regularly that makes the headlines. But, what happens to the majority of Belizean youths who are law-abiding, and who continue strive for excellence?

Well, last week was Youth Week 2015, and the Department of Youth Services organized a group of activities designed to honor outstanding youths. Elodio Aragon Jr., the Minister of State with responsibility for Youth, Sports and Culture, was the keynote speaker at the Youth Awards, on Friday night. He told the gathering that these awardees give him hope for the up-and-coming leadership of the nation:

The awards consisted of sixteen categories. They are as follows with their respective winners: The Environmental Award went to Adaly Cartagena of Ocean Academy.

Crystal Samos was given Innovation Award, while the Youth in Media award went David Smith. The Enterprise Award went to Kenrick Gonzalez, while the Arts and Culture Award was given to Raheem Mariano. The Differently Abled Award went to Janae Matute, while the Youth in Agriculture Award was given to Kadeem Bennett. The Pacesetter Award went to Rafael Castellanos, while the Youth in Sports Awards went to Mark Anderson and Kori Diego. The academic Excellence Award went to Aidan Flowers, and the CARICOM Youth Ambassador Awards went to Jeanelle Mencias, Bryton Codd, William Mahler, and Shaquille Young.

The Youth Minister's Award, the most prestigious award for the night, went to Andrew Munnings.
