For a few weeks now we've been hearing reports of persons making calls particularly to Chinese establishments - supposedly on behalf of Minister Wilfred Elrington. The calls we heard of occurred late at night - and the prankster on the line tells the businesspersons that Minister Wilfred Elrington is fund raising for Cabinet and needs a contribution. It's obviously a scam, but it's serious enough for Elrington to send out a press release today. The release says, quote, "persons claiming to be acting on his behalf have recently been contacting business establishments and individuals attempting to solicit donations."
It continues, , quote, "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs therefore informs the general public that neither the Ministry of Foreign Affairs nor the Minister, or anyone acting on his behalf, is requesting monetary or in-kind donations from any person or any business establishment."
Persons who get called are urged to report the calls and the phone numbers to police.
