BEL Asks For 11% Increase in Electricity Rate
posted (December 11, 2015)
In May of this year, we told you about the then newly reduced average light rate of 35 cents per kilowatt hour. It was the lowest in decades - and we should have known it couldn't last too long. Well, it may be over soon, because BEL is asking for an increase. The company is asking for the average rate to be increased from 35 cents to 38 cents per kilowatt hour - an increase of 11%. BEL says that this is to cope with what it calls the "actual cost of power for the 2012 - 2016 Full Tariff Review Period." BEL says the cost of power had been underestimated due to lower rates from CFE in Mexico.

The PUC has yet to respond and until it makes a formal decision, the average rate of 35 cents per kilowatt hour stands.
