Price Gouging On Sugar
posted (December 11, 2015)
Price gouging on sugar - we kinda knew it had to happen - and it is, all over. As we told you last Friday, the controlled price of white sugar is going up from 50 to 75 cents per pound - but that's not until January first. But, try telling that to those stores where they've already jacked up the price, and you can see it there in black and white.

That's why today Government sent out a release stressing, quote, "effective January 1, 2016, Plantation White Sugar will retail at a maximum price of 75 cents per pound countrywide." It adds, quote, "Failure to comply with the Supplies Control Price Regulations will result in imprisonment for a term not exceeding six (6) months, a fine of one thousand dollars ($1000.00), or to both such term of imprisonment and such fine." Of course, your average advantage - taking, price - gouging grocer knows that the Belize Bureau of Standards has zero enforcement and zero convictions, so most of them just persist in their illegality. Of course its up to you, the consumer to reject the illegal price of 75 cents per pound and calls the supplies control unit at 822-2665.
