Suspect Tries To Commit Suicide
posted (December 21, 2015)
On Thursday's newscast, we told you about 25 year-old Lane Grinage. He was the 19th person to be charged in connection with the aggravated burglary at the estate of the Lebanese Diplomat, Sarkis Abou Nehra. Well according to police, he's at the KHMH tonight after he allegedly tried to take his life while on lockdown at the Ladyville Police station over the weekend.

Now, the last time a suspect was found dead in the Ladyville holding cell area, police said that he hung himself. His family vehemently disputed that, suggesting that police were involved. Well, the commander of the Eastern Division Rural is taking no chances, and today, he held a press briefing to discuss Lane Grinage's alleged attempt to take his own life. According to police, their newly installed surveillance equipment in the holding cell allowed police to catch the incident just in time before Grinage was successful at taking his own life.

Here's how the Eastern Division Rural's Commanding Officer told the press this evening:

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"Over the weekend we had an incident in our cell block where Mr. Lane Grinage attempted to commit suicide. Fortunately for us because of the surveillance mechanism that we put in place after we had suicide in our cell block at Ladyville Police Station, the officers were alerted and were able to get into the cell block and get to Mr. Grinage where he was rushed to the BDF medical center and then later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he undergo treatment and is currently still at KHMH if I am not mistaking. The doctors were not willing to release him until he was able to receive psychological evaluation. He also left a suicide note of which the details I will not go into because we may use the note on evidence for the aggravated burglary. When the officers went to the cell block, they found a red rag that he apparently tried to his neck and tie it to the bar and try to strangle himself."

According to police, as soon as Grinage is released by the KHMH, he will be taken to the Belize City Magistrate's Court to be arraigned. He will be facing charges of Aggravated Burglary, Conspiracy to commit Aggravated Burglary, Conspiracy to commit Rape, Handling stolen goods and Theft.
