posted (December 28, 2015)
The life of one year old Genesis Medina was cut short when a man, suspected to have been under the influence at the time, knocked her down last night. The incident happened in the village of San Estevan in front of the child's home. So, what was Baby Genesis doing out on the street unattended, and why was the driver of the vehicle speeding in the middle of the village? Emanuel Pech travelled North today to find out.

Three months ago, baby Genesis Medina celebrated her first birthday. But the joy that this innocent smile brought to her family has been replaced by lingering grief. On Sunday around 4:40 pm Baby Genesis was knocked down and killed by this speeding gold Mazda pickup driven by a 28th year old resident of Trial Farm Village. The vehicle hit the child and dragged her small body about 100 yards from the house. Assistant Superintendent Selwyn Tillett described the tragic scene police witnessed.

"On yesterday's date, 27th December at about 5pm police visited Calle del Sol Street in San Estevan Village, Orange Walk District where they observed the body of a female infant lying motionless faced up on the right hand side of the street. She was wearing a pink floral dress. The body had a large open fractured skull at the right side of the forehead with about 4 inches in length and also she had scrapes on her chest. A large piece of her brain tissue was seen about 5 feet away from the body."

The family is shattered by what they describe as a freak accident. One split second that changed their lives forever.

"The baby was taken really good by her parents with who are very hard working parents to give them a good living. The baby was playing with her brothers and in the blink of an eye, her dad turned around and everything happened like lightening. The baby went out on the street in front of her house and the man drunk, he took away the life of the baby."

"You had previously mentioned the house where you have a protective gate, so the baby doesn't come out. How did the bay came out?"

Cousin of Deceased - Fatal knockdown
"My uncle always leaves the gate closed with locks and the whole house was closed, so we don't know how the baby came out."

Baby Genesis was the youngest of 5 children. She was also the only girl, and the apple of her father's eyes.

Cousin of Deceased - Fatal knockdown
"Only my uncle was there. He was of course devastated by the news watching his little baby princess lying down on the road in the middle of the road. So he took the baby because he doesn't want his baby to be there lying down. So he held the baby and it was really sad because there was blood everywhere."

From all indications, the driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid. Instead he sped off past the San Estevan R. C. School and continued his escape until he ran the vehicle into this cane field, located on a feeder road about a mile from the accident scene.

ASP Selwyn Tillette- O. C. Orange Walk Police
"At about 5:30 that same day Orange Walk police visited a feeder road between 2 cane fields about a mile off Fresh Water Creek Road in San Estevan Village, where they saw the said vehicle with license plate OW - A00637 about 5 yards inside a cane field. The driver of the truck, one Eliseo Larios, a Belizean laborer of Trial Farm has since been detained pending charges."

Emanuel Pech
"Was there any indication of alcohol consumption of the driver?"

ASP Selwyn Tillette- O. C. Orange Walk Police
"We suspect, but we cannot determine that until the proof of forensics. The doctor will decide that. But we suspect he was under the influence."
