Five Years For A Firearm
posted (December 30, 2015)

26 year-old Brian Davis, a labourer of Sandhill Village, is spending his first night of a 5 year prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to being in possession of a unlicensed shotgun.

According to Eastern Division Rural Police, they conducted a search of his residence at mile 19 and a half on the Northern Highway just before 8 this morning. Davis and his 26 year-old common-law wife, Luise Meneses, were present at the time of the search, and that's when police found a 16 gauge shotgun and five16 gauge cartridges.

Police charged both of them keeping an unlicensed firearm, and keep unlicensed ammunition, and they were arraigned in Magistrate's Court today. Davis took the rap and pleaded guilty claiming ownership of the unlicensed shotgun. That allowed his common-law wife to go free after the charges were withdrawn against her, but he got a stiff mandatory minimum sentence. He was handed 5 years for the gun, and 5 years for ammunition, but since both sentences will run concurrently, he will only spend 5 years in jail.
