Baby Gismael Aban Making Progress
posted (December 30, 2015)

Two days ago, we told you about Baby Gismael Aban, the infant from Corozal who was born without the tube connecting his mouth to his stomach. If it wasn't fixed with highly specialized surgery not available in Belize, his life would have been short and very painful.

Well, World Pediatric Project in Belize made contact with the Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital – which came through big time. They immediately decided to take on his case, and on Boxing Day, they sent a private Jet to fly him from Belize to Virginia.

We're told tonight that as soon as he arrived he underwent his first surgery to ensure that he can get the proper nutrients. Since he has been stabilized, the doctors at VCU Hospital will wait until January 11, to perform a second reconstructive surgery, where they will build him an esophagus that will work in the place of the one he was born without.

His family and the officials at WPP in Belize are very excited about his safe arrival in the US, and they are hoping for a complete success. The multiple procedures are expected to cost 1 million dollars to rectify – but he gets it for free as a charity case.
