Mile Six Is Dangerous
posted (January 4, 2016)
About 3 hours earlier, there was another 2-car mash-up right at the same stretch of road. The two collisions are about on a few hundred yards apart. Fortunately, the victims in this accident survived, and are receiving treatment at the KHMH.

The Commander of the Eastern Division Rural also discussed that accident with the press at a briefing this morning.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"The first involving a blue Chevy Equinox, license plate BC - C51091 and a blue Ford Escort with license plate BC - C50646. Both were extensively damaged and we had minor injuries to individuals in this accident. We had Mr. Andre Gordon, 30 years old Belizean security of Barakat Street who was driving the Chevy Equinox and we had in the blue Ford Escort Marvin Ramirez, 27 years Belizean laborer of Tibruce Street, Belize City."

Reporter
"Is there any indication what might have happened? We saw pictures of the vehicle. They were extensively damaged."

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"The investigation is revealing that the blue Ford Escort was in the wrong lane when the head on collision occurred."

Reporter
"Is it believe that in that incident that alcohol was a factor?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"We suspect that alcohol may have been a factor in that first accident, yes."

So, since that area was the location of 2 accidents on the same day, and at least 5 accidents in the past 13 months, are Ladyville police taking notice of this area as a danger zone? That's what the Rural Commander was asked. Here's how he answered that one:

Reporter
"Can you speak as to the particular area? Two accidents at one location within hours of each other. Is that consider a very dangerous curve?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"It is considered a dangerous curve, yes. What cause the second accident is still under investigation at this time."

Reporter
"Do you believe that with your experience that it is time for police to maybe actively pursue a drinking and driving campaign? Because the police has skirted on the edges of it, one spell you hear they get breathalyzers, then you never see the breathalyzers again and there has never been an active campaign to stop drinking on the roads, on the streets. Do you think it's time for that to happen?"

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"I believe that we need to get the necessary resources that we need to enforce the traffic laws on all major highways. With the road safety project, I think that we are getting there. But the enforcement needs to improve on our major roads."

We understand that police have issued a notice of intended prosecution against the drivers of those 2 vehicles.
