New Year Starts With Southside Homicide
posted (January 4, 2016)
Belize City made it through December without a murder - but then January started - and five hours in - the Southside recorded its first homicide. A 21 year old was killed not far from his home. Police say Kieron Moss was walking with two females at 5:-00 in the morning on Levi Slusher Street in the Port Loyola when two men on a motorbike pulled up and executed him. His family is asking why. I found out more:..

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
A youth leader and a role model: That's what 21 year old Kieron Moss's friends and family describe him as. They say, Moss inspired the other kids with his charisma and his free spirit.

He had a long life ahead of him but instead of embracing a new beginning in 2016.

He was gasping for breath in the gravel after he was shot several times. He died right here on New Years Day.

Voice of: Brother
"Everybody was here gathering, deciding what was going to be the plan for the night and then I left before them and then everybody was supposed to meet up afterwards, but unfortunately, things didn't went as plan and some people came home, but Keiron didn't come he went to part with some friends and then everybody brought in the new year's regularly and then we heard the news later in the morning that he got shot."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So where you all were supposed to meet up?"

Voice of: Brother
"At the Memorial Park."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So when you got there and you all didn't see him, you guys just decided to go home because you thought maybe he was with some friends?"

Voice of: Brother
"We thought that he didn't came out as yet."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Around what time you got that call? You guys were already at home right?"

Voice of: Brother
"About after 4, the missed called came in yes."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So what was going through your mind when hours are passing, but you don't see your brother, he didn't show up at home. Did you even think or ever think that he was somewhere shot dead?"

Voice of: Brother
"No ma'am. We just thought that maybe he was out partying as usual, because he is a happy person and always kept everyone around him smiling, because he is just a happy person."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Tell us more about him. Did you both have a close relationship - he is your older brother?"

Voice of: Brother
"Yes ma'am. We grew up together. He basically taught me different things in life. All of us that hang out together loves playing basketball and he is very much like our role model, because he is very good at playing basketball and he likes to DJ."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So you looked up to your brother?"

Voice of: Brother
"Yes ma'am. We just need to accept it, although everything feel like a dream right now. But we just need to stay together and continue to live on because he would want us to stay happy."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Do you have any idea what might have happen, what might have gone wrong to lead to his death?"

Voice of: Brother
"No ma'am, it's just shocking."

While his family are in shock, the police don't have answers for them.

ASP Marcia Moody, OC, Precinct 2, Police
"Also on the 1st January about 5:12am, police also visited Levi Slusher Street in the Jane Usher area. Information is that there was a young man that was shot. On the arrival, the police saw one Keiron Moss of Freedom Street who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body. He was apparently dead on the scene and was later confirmed by the medical people from the ambulance. Investigation at this time, we have since detained one young man who is of interest, who we believe can assist us with our investigation for the purpose of questioning. No motive so far as it relates to this shooting we have established. We are still investigating."

Ten expended shells were found at the scene.

One senior police officer told us they were overextended with various policing duties for New Years Eve and they didn't have enough coverage in the area of Levi Slusher Street which is known to have many feuding gangs.
