Is Transnational Narcotics A Foreign Affairs Issue?
posted (January 7, 2016)
So, while police and the Alcoser family continue to look for the missing man, law enforcement are still trying to confirm where the 183 pounds of marijuana came from, and where it was headed. But, the working theory at this time is that it came from Mexico, and the "J" imprint is believed to be connected to one of the drug cartels in Mexico. And, most likely, it was destined for drug peddlers in Belize City, San Pedro and Placencia.

And while it's a law enforcement problem, it's also engenders an aspect of international relations - since the cartels now appear to be a factor in Belize's domestic weed supply. We asked Foreign Minister Elrington, about his thoughts on the very real possibility that a new feature of the drug trade is developing. Here's what he had to say:

Hon. Wilfred Elrington
"Anything that has potential to harm our society will be of maximum concern to all of us and not only to our leaders, but also to every Belizean citizen. So that if that is in fact happening, it is certainly a matter that is of great concern to me and I am sure to the government of Prime Minister Barrow. So I am sure every effort will be made to try to ascertain the details and to see whether there is any credibility to that ascertain. But it has to be of concern to us, because you know the hell that our neighboring countries are going through because of the activities of gangs and drug dealers and human traffickers and the like. It's a terrible scourge on the region and perhaps on the world. So those are things that would be naturally of concern to us."
