Teenager On Motorbike Killed
posted (January 18, 2016)
A 19 year old was knocked down and killed on the Old Northern Highway. On Saturday afternoon at around 2 Maykon Divas was heading back to his Lucky Strike home on his motorcycle when he crashed head on into with a Toyota Landcruiser. It happened near mile 25 on the Old Northern. The driver of the Landcruiser, 47 year old Joan Crooks was carrying 4 passengers from Altun Ha when the collision occurred. Divas was flung form his motorbike and died on the spot. Today we traveled to Lucky Strike Village to find out more from the family.

A lot of work is left to be done in this bedroom, the walls need to be plastered and the door and ceiling still need to be installed. Even after all the structural details are finished, it has to be cleaned, painted and transformed into a comfortable space.

The man in charge of the construction was 19 year old Maykon Divas. He wasn't discouraged by all the work he had to do. In fact, he was excited because he knew when the room was completed, he would enjoy making it his own.

Divas got off work early on Saturday afternoon to get back to work on his new room. He was heading home on his motorcycle when he collided with a land cruiser. He was flung off his cycle and landed on this spot.

Soon after, the police and Divas' family got the call and they rushed out to find him his mangled body on the road.

"A Millennium black motorcycle with license plate MC-3377 collided into a Toyota Landcruiser BZC-24981 which was driver by one Joan Crooks, 47 years old of 903 Bella Vista and was insured by RF&G. Unfortunately Mr. Maykon Divas, 19 years delivery manager of Lucky Strike succumb to his injuries received in this incident."

"Yes at that moment we went to the scene and when we reached he was thrown there - dead…the woman who knocked him down just turned around, she didn't have the decency to tell us anything, she didn't say a word."

But now, words can't take away the sorrow nor can they bring her son back.

"My son had a lot of plans but they took his life, he was a good son, he wasn't rude, he didn't have vices, he was a hard worker. He had a lot of plans in the future, but he can't accomplish nothing now."

Finishing this bedroom in about a month was one of those plans. He was going to stay here with his mom and little sister until he could save the money to build his own house for his future wife and kids. But now none of those aspirations will be fulfilled. His family will never know how his room would have looked or how happy he would have been staying there: this addition will now remain a barren, messy and incomplete space and Divas' mother has to find the will to accept that and keep living.

"I don't know how I will continue to live without him, but I have to do it, I have to do it, I have 2 other kids, I have a little girl, she is 8 and can't talk, she needs me."

When we spoke to police this evening, they told us they are still investigating but so far it seems that Divas was in the wrong. They say he was speeding and he probably veered too much into Crooks's lane.

So while another family has lost a loved one to a traffic accident, what are police going to do to keep drivers and motorists safe on the twisting, turning Old Northern? Today at a press conference Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster told us what he proposes for this dangerous stretch of road.

Sr. Sup. Edward Broaster, O. C. Eastern Rural
"I think the Old Northern Highway needs signs yes to indicate speed limit and so forth. At this time we have one highway patrol. We are hoping to get another vehicle where we will be having highway patrols from Maskall to Sandhill. So that in itself will probably alleviate that problem of speeding in that area."
