PUP Leadership Debate Flops
posted (January 26, 2016)
The PUP Leadership Debate…won't happen. The announcement was made today that the debate had been, quote, "suspended." That's because, according to a press release, "Two of the candidates failed to respond to formally inform the committee of their intention to appear as scheduled by the close of business late yesterday." Our information is that only Francis Fonseca had indicated his readiness to participate, while the representatives Cordel Hyde and John Briceno didn't.

Today we asked the lead organizer Glenn Tillett how he feels about his best laid plans falling through:...

Glenn Tillett, Debate Organizer
"We could not get a formal commitment from two of the proposed participants and we were running out of time. There are some logistical and infrastructural details that matters we have to take care of and we felt with 72 hours to go and not having a firm commitment, it was best that we abandoned the idea."

Emanuel Pech
"Can it be chopped down to being the fault of the organizer for pulling it out at such a short notice?"

Glenn Tillett, Debate Organizer
"We are tremendously disappointed. We have expended a lot of time, energy and some money in doing this - getting venues, getting participation from the public, meeting with the participants. So we are tremendously disappointed. I am not going to cast blame or assign blame to anybody. I just that that was the best decision under the circumstances. Certainly schedules could have been adjusted and the accommodation could have been made."

As we understand it, the Briceno and Hyde camps have a full schedule of meetings with delegates leading up to Sunday's convention.
