Alleged Shooting In A Bus With 60 Passengers
posted (January 27, 2016)

So, while police in Corozal and Belize City are busy trying to solve those two murders, Cayo Police are investigating what looks to be a shooting which happened on a Westline Bus which was carrying 60 passengers.

It happened sometime before 3:00 this afternoon, when the bus was on the George Price Highway heading toward Belize City. Initial reports went out that one passenger shot another in the head, but San Ignacio Investigators aren't so sure about that. They think that if he was indeed shot, he was only grazed in the right side of the head, but it could have been that he was clubbed in the head with the gun.

This evening, the Deputy Commander of San Ignacio Police spoke with us via phone, and he told us what they know at this time:

ASP. Reymundo Reyes - Deputy OC, San Ignacio Police

"Information was received something around 2:30 PM that a passenger inside a West line bus that was travelling towards Belize City has been shot in his head. As a result immediate police response was sent to the area on arrival where one Conward Thomas was seeing bleeding from the upper right side of his head. He was immediately transported to the San Ignacio Town Hospital where he was been treated for the said injury. At this moment we are questioning people who were in the bus as to what actually they heard. The information was saying that he was shot, what we have seen is even if it was a shot it was just a graze that we have, slight injury in the ride side of his head; he will be treated and release. Investigation at this moment so far, all we have is that it appears that when he was at the Welcome Centre area waiting for the bus he had a slight misunderstanding with an individual at the said Welcome Centre. When they boarded the bus it appears that the individual that he has the argument with was in the bus also. Once on their way, upon reaching Esperanza Village by the first bus stop that is when apparently the individual approached him from behind and inflicted the said injuries on Thomas. But at this moment we are trying to establish whether it was a gunshot or whether he was knocked with the gun on the right side of the head. After the incident the person came off the bus and made good his escape. We have 2 persons in custody who we are questioning at the moment and we are conducting house searches to see because of the description of the clothing given to us and so forth. We try to see if we could find all of these so that we could have it at as start of the evidence."

We also got a chance to speak with the driver of the bus, who discussed what he saw in the aftermath of the incident. Here's what he told us:

Patrick Miranda - Bus Driver

"I never hear no noise like that like what the people they say. They say a silencer on the thing and I was way da front I don't know what really gone on like that. When I come da back I just see blood and I could see something like a gunshot in the man head and so but I really don't know what gone on. The man just walk, I feel like the man was a regular passenger and the man just walk pass the bus, jump in through the backdoor and do what he have to do and jump out back through the back door."

"Is it true that the person gets in at terminal or get in right here?"

Patrick Miranda - Bus Driver

"Get in right here, right down the hill at Rodger by the bar right there but they had their own promotion way from the terminal. I don't know how bally get here but he didn't get here on the bus. When the bus stop just now, he was in the village and walk to the bus and do what he had to do."

Reporter

"When the man walks pass you, you see any gun?"

Patrick Miranda - Bus Driver

"I no see no gun, none at all. No gun none at all, the passengers say they see the gun, I no see none."

Police say that the victim is being treated, and it is expected that he will be released.
