Robbers Playing Cops?
posted (February 11, 2016)
Tonight there are two reports of robbers pretending to be cops! The first comes from CBC Cable on C Street in Belize City. Last night, just before midnight, the security guard heard banging at the door, and someone shouting "Police, Police come out." He went out and was met by two Hispanic men dressed in what looked like police uniforms who said they were there to search for a concealed weapon. One of the pretend-police carried a shotgun - and the other wore a sweater and wielded a flashlight. The security guard dutifully let them in, and they found nothing. They then asked to see the security guard's loaded .38 revolver and told him he will be taken in for questioning. After that, they tied his hands, took the gun, and just left him there.

Almost the same thing happened at the Harpy Security Firm at 12:10 am yesterday. Just after midnight, the dispatcher was the company's Antelope Street Extension headquarters, heard someone at the front door and when she opened it, she saw a man dressed in something close enough to a police uniform, who introduced himself as a "Police Officer". He said that he was there to make checks, so she opened the front door and just let him in. That's when he pulled a knife from his pants, grabbed her from around her neck, and took her inside the main office where he demanded that she open one of the doors. She did, and he searched inside. He found nothing and took nothing but told the terrified dispatcher that he had been watching the place for a while and knows her family, so she should not call the police. He left, and checks confirmed that nothing was stolen.

But the two reports are very disturbing, and it's a case of criminals preying on the very culture created by police who routinely storm into properties and search without warrants.

Well, tonight the cops are issuing an advisory. They say, quote, "business owners are strongly encouraged to revisit their security systems and mechanisms in order to safeguard their businesses and properties, especially firearms and assist in the prevention of these incidents by first confirming that indeed persons presenting themselves are police officers by requesting identification card."

Now, try telling that to anyone whose home has been raided by the GSU - and they'll tell you that asking for an ID is like asking for a club in the head!

Still, the release waxes on by saying, quote, "When in doubt, seek confirmation by calling 911 or your police precinct in your area."
