Tonight the Corozal District is shaken after Fruta Bomba IN SAN JOAQUIN laid off half its staff in a single swoop today. According to the Ministry of Labour, 123 employees were laid off today.

A number of them have complained to the media about what they feel is a pittance they are receiving in compensation after years of work.

The Ministry says it is giving advice to a number of employees, and it is working closely with management to ensure that the legal requirements under redundancy are bring met, while primarily making sure that the wages and benefits due to all employees are paid.

Of course, that is cold comfort to the 251 persons who will be laid off as the company closes down its Belize operation and moves out to the Dominican Republic.

Fruta Bomba operated in Belize for 22 years, but the company said it was not making a profit and could not turn the company around. Insiders say they had problems with the Department of the Environment.
