NICH Talks Artifact Preservation
posted (February 22, 2016)
There are many different types of collectors: collectors of historical pieces, collectors of books, collectors of paintings, and many others. The list is wide and varied. However if there is one thing these collectors have in common is that they all must fight against the weathering of time to keep the pieces in their collection looking their best for as long as they can.

Today the National institute of Culture and History under the auspices of the Museum of Belize hosted the start of a three day workshop that focused on just that- Risk Assessment in Collection Management. Or in other words, finding or creating the best conditions for pieces to stand the test of time.

The workshop is a follow up initiative to the workshop held last year on the basics of conservation techniques and object handling. Rebecca Newberry, Conservation expert of the Science Museum of Minnesota led the workshop. Sherilyne Jones, the Director of the Museum of Belize and the Houses of Culture spoke to us about workshop and its relevance to Belize.

The workshop concludes on Wednesday with a site visit to Xunantunich and Cahal Pech.
