National Leaders Meet
posted (March 2, 2016)
In early February when we spoke to the freshly sworn in PUP party leader John Briceno, he said that his first order of business was to meet with his parliamentarians to discuss the restructuring of the party. But another important order of business was to meet with the Prime Minister – and he did so this morning. Briceno told us it was a courtesy call but he still took that opportunity to discuss some pressing national issues.

Hon. John Briceno - PUP Party Leader

"It is more of a courtesy visit since I've been elected as the new leader of the PUP and also as the leader of the opposition, I think that it is important for both of us to meet and to discuss some of the important issues that are confronting our country. Of course the one that comes to mind is the issue of the Sarstoon incident that took place over the weekend. I pointed out to the Prime Minister that we in the PUP want to be fully engaged with the government when it comes to issues of national importance and the Belize Guatemala referendum is certainly one of them."

And to show that the PUP is engaged in tackling this issue, Briceno has formed a committee within the party that will advise him on the Belize Guatemala territorial dispute and, he hopes, also work along with the government.

Hon. John Briceno - PUP Party Leader

"As a party I have set up a team to address the Belize Guatemala issue for the party to advise me as the leader and to advise the party. And that team is made up of the past foreign ministers of the PUP. So we have the Rt. Honourable Said Musa who is chairing the committee. We have Assad Shoman, Eamon Courtenay, Lisa Shoman and Godfrey Smith. All of them have been gracious enough to accept to be a part of that team."
