Waterloo – is Cruise Port A Bridge Too Far?
posted (March 2, 2016)
Waterloo – that's the name of the Ashcroft Allied company which is the receiver for the Port of Belize. And that's also the company, which would spearhead the construction of a cruise ship berthing facility at the Port of Belize – if such a project were to ever get off the ground. Last word was that Waterloo was considering the investment – but now the activist group COLA says they've already decided against it. COLA – which has been consistently in favour of Mike Feinstein's Stake Bank Project – says in a release, quote, "Government has been left with mud in its eye…the Ashcroft group sources say is not interested in investing in a cruise port at the site. Yesterday we asked Investment Minister of State Tracy Taegar Panton about it and she said as far as she knows – the proposal has not been rejected:…

"We've heard talks about Belize port; it has been on the news for quite some time recently as of last week when we understand that Waterloo company which is part of the Ashcroft Alliance met in Miami to discuss matters about the port. Has there been any feedback that has gotten back to the Ministry of Investment, if so what's the talks there?"

Hon. Tracy Taegar Panton - Minister of State, Investment

"The ministry of Investment participated in a meeting with the Waterloo Group. That meeting was held here in Belize in which the Waterloo Group who actually the receiver for the current port facilities are looking at expanding the port facilities as it relates to containers and bulk shipments from Belize. They are also looking at the visibility and it's very preliminary so that I can make that clear of potentially a cruise ship docking facility in Belize City."

"Apparently Ashcroft did not see it as being a practical investment, that is the initial reports we have gotten some weeks ago."

Hon. Tracy Taegar Panton - Minister of State, Investment

"Certainly that is not information I have."

Predictably, COLA calls on Prime Minister Dean Barrow to, quote, "come back to the table on the Stake Bank Tourism Project and press forward urgently."
