DPP Says Ravell Should Pay More, Court Agrees
posted (March 3, 2016)
In June 2008, Ravell Gonzalez, who was Orange Walk's Mayor at the time, knocked down and killed two people on the northern highway. He was arrested and charged with 2 counts of causing death by careless conduct for the deaths of Manuel Coto and his 2 year-old toddler Martita Lopez.

He was tried and convicted last year in the Supreme Court, and Justice Troadio Gonzalez imposed fines to a total of $8,000, and compensation to the family of the 2 year-old toddler who was killed. Well, Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl Lynn Vidal didn't think that justice was served with that sentence, and so she appealed the case yesterday before the Court of Appeal.

After making her case to the judges, the Appeal Court agreed. They set aside the Supreme Court sentence and ordered him to pay a new fine of $8,000 and $10,000 in compensation to the family of the victims. He must pay the fine and compensation over a period of 2 years. If he defaults on payment he will serve 9 months.
