Man stabbed Himself; Cops Not Sure of Suicide
posted (March 18, 2016)
A man allegedly stabbed himself in the throat last night in Lords Bank, Ladyville. 41 year old Oscar Ulises Castillo Gomez was hanging out at his friend's house on Cahal Pech Street. Everything was perfectly normal throughout the day until after 6 when Gomez just picked up a knife and jammed it in his throat. It's quite a bizarre incident and I went to Lord's Bank to get more answers.

Courtney Weatherburne Reporting

Most evenings after work, Oscar Gomez would sit on these steps outside his cousin's house.

He would normally just relax and play around with the dogs.

But yesterday he didn't have any construction work, so he spent some time here at his friend's house. It was a normalThursday, they just hung out until Gomez left around noon. But his friend told us that when Gomez came back to his house later that evening - he began to act very strange. He said someone was looking for him and that he needed a place to hide.

Things got even stranger when Gomez went upstairs changed into a red shirt, grabbed a knife and placed it to his own throat. His friend thought he was just joking around but that's when Gomez allegedly pierced himself in throat.

The friend then hurriedly jumped on his bike and rode over to Gomez's cousin's house.

Voice of: Jessica Vasquez - Family of Deceased
"He rode over to my house, and he said, 'Jessica, come out quote.' I came out and he told me that Oscar just stabbed himself. I couldn't believe it, and I started to tremble."

They police arrived shortly after and they carried Gomez down the stairs - as blood drained from his neck.

ACP Edward Broaster - OC, Eastern Division Rural
"Our Rural Rapid Response Team went to the area where they discovered 1, Oscar Castillo Gomez, 41 years old, suffering from a stab wound to the neck, and bleeding profusely. We have no clue at this time what would have led Mr. Gomez to have taken his life."

And his family also has no idea why Gomez would want to kill himself. They told us that before he went back to his friend's house, he was helping the neighbor trim these trees - and they didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Gomez's cousin told us that even if he was depressed or was going through problems he never spoke to them about it. Now the only explanation they can find is that he must have been drunk.

Voice of: Jessica Vasquez
"Like how he was always drunk, maybe he was drinking or not, I don't know. Because when they drink too much, they get crazy."

Courtney Weatherburne
"He drank a lot?"

Voice of: Jessica Vasquez
"Oh yes, I never - he barely came around here. They used to drink a lot. He didn't come home for 3 weeks"

It is a baffling case and although police say they found no defensive wounds on Gomez - they must consider all possible angles in their investigation.

ACP Edward Broaster
"We are investigating it as it was reported to us as a suicide, but like I said, we are not ruling out anything right now. We're investigating thorougly to piece together what transpired at time of the stabbing."

Gomez was a Salvadoran national. He had a wife and 4 kids living in El Salvador. He had only been living in Belize for a year. As for the friend Gomez was with, the family does not believe that he had anything to do with Gomez's death.
