Cops Say Driver May Have Been
posted (March 18, 2016)
Accident victim Aldo Chavarria was flown out of the country today after receiving massive injuries yesterday. His wife Marie Nicole remain in a critical but stable condition at the Belize Medical Associates.

As we showed you last night, the couple was ejected from their Jeep SUV when they collided into a guardrail along a western highway canal between miles 11 and 12. It happened at2:00 in the afternoon when Chavarria clipped an oncoming dumptruck and lost control of his vehicle. Both he and his wife were flung out of the top of the Jeep. Fortunately an ambulance was also in the three car crash, and the EMT who was driving used his stretcher to carry them off the shoulder of the road where they lay badly injured.

Today, the officer in charge of Hattieville told the media he feels Chavarria was distracted while driving:

Hipolito Novelo - Love News
"Do you believe that Mr. Chavarria may have been distracted while overtaking this dump truck?"

Sgt. E. Clarke - OC, Hattieville Police Station
"It is difficult to say if he was distracted, however, based on my experience of travelling on the highway, I can for certain that persons are distracted on the highways in this country. They remain distracted, and that is probably the reason why Mr. Chavarria lost control of the vehicle and clipped the dump truck. That is the impression we've gotten, both from persons we've interviewed."

Orson Picart - Krem News
"Has a notice of intended prosecution been issued in this case, or is the investigation still continues?"

Sgt. E. Clarke
"Actually all drivers were issued with NIP's, however, as it relates to Mr. Chavarria, since he's in a critical condition at the Medical Associates, he hasn't been issued with that NIP as yet. Should he recover, the same will be done."

We spoke to the family who told us that they don't believe that it was Aldo's fault. He has a fractured elbow, a broken nose, a fractured jaw, a broken ankle and two broken legs - as well as an injury to the chest.
