Grieving Mother Says She Wants Her Baby's Body Back
posted (March 21, 2016)
Tonight a young mother is left heartbroken after she couldn't bury the remains of her unborn child. And that's because she claims that the Northern Regional Hospital misplaced her baby's remains. Shamika Flowers was about 5 months pregnant when she had a miscarriage on Friday. It was a devastating blow for her after she had been trying for so long to have her first child. But her world came crumbling down when she went to the Orange Walk morgue to get her baby's remains - they told her they couldn't find it. Flowers told our colleagues at CTV 3 more about her disheartening situation.

Shamika Flowers
"Friday I had the miscarriage and they made me sign the paper saying that the baby is at the morgue. When I went this morning to go get my baby, there was no baby there. I don't know what to do because, I want my baby in his box - to put him at rest. Now I don't have my baby, what am I going to do with this box? Everyone is already home at my village in Crooked Tree waiting for me to bring the baby to bury him. They already made the tomb. This isn't right."

"You were 5 months pregnant?"

Shamika Flowers
"Almost, one more week, this week would have made 5 months."

Reporter
"What did they tell you when you arrived there this morning?"

Shamika Flowers
"They can't find the baby, they don't know where the baby went, and they can't locate the baby. We went to the administration and they told us that they wanted to pay us for the funeral costs and things like that. They just want us to shut up and do nothing about it, I'm not looking for any money but I at least want my baby. If they would just call me and say 'miss we found the baby', well I'd be happy to put my baby at rest. No one knows what I'm going through."

CEO in the Ministry of Health told us he is aware of the situation and he is investigating it. He told us that from what he understands someone buried the body without consulting the family. He says he will look into it. We will have an update tomorrow.
