Punta Gorda Robbers Left Loot Behind
posted (March 22, 2016)
Punta Gorda police ended up in a shoot-out with armed robbers on Monday night after they foiled the robbery of a Chinese store.

It happened around 9:00 when police received a 911 call of a robbery in progress, and they quickly responded to James Store, located on Maria Nunez Street, PG Town. There they found the store's security guard had been tied up. They went inside and found the 2 shop attendants also bound by the hands and feet. The shop's employees signaled to police that the thieves were still in the shop, and that's when the officers went to the back building. The encountered 2 men who immediately opened fire on them and fled on foot. The officers set chase, but the two gunmen escaped. When the officers returned and searched the area, they found a blue knapsack, apparently abandoned by the thieves who ran off and forgot the bag. When the officers searched it, they found the entire stolen loot from the store including just over 41 thousand dollars cash, an assortment of phone cards, electronics, and merchandise belonging to the store that the men were attempting to steal.

The officers released the captive employees, contacted the owners, and deposited the items as exhibit in the criminal case to come. 4 persons have been detained, and 2 others are being sought at this time.
