Canal Side Killing In City
posted (March 23, 2016)
In 2012 Victor Garnett got off a drug related double murder, escaping the possibility of life imprisonment. But today he did not escape from the verdict of the streets. He was shot and killed at the corner of St. Jude and Sibun Street inside a known gang area. It happened just a few minutes after two which is when our cameras got there.

Police say that Garnett had gone to that area and parked his vehicle to the side of the road. Police say he was either waiting for someone or had stopped to talk to someone when he was shot. Residents report hearing, at the most, 5 distinctive shots and at least one of those shots caught him in the head. And here is another telling fact that the investigation is revealing so far- it was a teenager who pulled the trigger. Southside commander ACP Chester Williams told us what they know so far.

ACP Chester Williams - OC, Eastern Division South

"The victim is one Garnett from San Pedro, he was in San Pedro and apparently he moved to Belize City recently. I guess new people would be familiar with him, he was charged for 3 murders in San Pedro, a double murder and another murder. From what we are seeing it appears as he was in that area waiting for somebody and that person or persons might have met him and eventually inflicted the gun show wounds that he sustained which subsequently resulted in his demise."

"Has there been a motive at this time? We know that he has been in trouble with the law for drug related offences. Could this be a possible motive for this murder?"

ACP Chester Williams - OC, Eastern Division South

"Well as investigators we try to keep every possibility open. When we conduct investigations we try not to leave any stones unturned and that is a possibility that we are looking at. We're also looking at the possibility of retaliation as a result of those murders for which he had been accused of. From our investigation that we gathered so far is that the suspect is a teenager who came out of a yard and fired the shots at him; two teenagers actually came out of a yard and fired at him and eventually caught him in the head and that was the fatal injury."

Investigators are interviewing several witnesses and scouting the area for any possible physical evidence that they might be able to use including security cameras from nearby buildings.

But while the investigation is looking good, ACP Williams did tell us with remorse that if they had played their cards a little differently, the incident could have been prevented.

"Earlier during the day we had received certain information and the police had responded to the information and those persons who were involved in that information upon seeing the police coming, they took off and they were not caught by the police. The police remain in the area patrolling and the police cannot stay on one area, the police has to move around and apparently they took advantage of the opportunity when police was no in the immediate area to have committed the crime."

Victor Garnett was a resident of San Pedro where he was shot in 2014. Police say he had recently relocated to the City.
