Mexican Embassy Says Chetumal Extortion Isolated
posted (April 6, 2016)
The Mexican Embassy in Belize has responded to our request for a comment on that crazy story coming out of Chetumal where a businessman was extorted inside his room at the Fiesta Inn.

The Embassy Public Relations tells us, quote, "According to information available to this…office, this is an isolated case." It continues, quote "Reports from the Honorary Consul of Belize in Mexico, Jorge Luis Valencia, indicate that about 30 thousand Belizean citizens visited the State of Quintana Roo during the Easter holiday period and no other incident of this nature (was reported), which proves the safety of the area." End quote.

And speaking of the Fiesta Inn, he says, quote, "the representatives of the hotel, immediately gave all possible support to the affected person and his family. The hotel's management and authorities are in constant coordination in the investigations into the case in order to minimize the possibility of a similar incident." End quote.

We have also learned that the Mexican Authorities have an active travel advisory, warning travellers about extortion fraud over the telephone.
