GOB Seeking Guatemalan Help With Lambey Investigation
posted (April 7, 2016)
And while the BDF have done a preliminary report, who's doing the investigation into the identity of the Guatemalans who ambushed Staff Sergeant Lambey? The Government's press release immediately following the Holy Saturday shooting stated that the Government intended to call in the Organization of American States to verify the details and evidence of the shooting.

But what about the police investigation? Lovell told us that at this time, the main line of inquiry for the investigators is the Guatemalan angle:

George Lovell, CEO, Ministry of National Security
"Very unfortunate incident. One when you look at it, it may or may not could have been avoided. It depends on how one would look at it. I can tell you that there have been a series of investigations done. Whenever there is any criminal activity or occurrence. What normally happens is our police who has jurisdiction to investigate these matters, conducts an investigation which was done. And a report was provided to us by the commissioner of police in that regard. We had also, because this occurred in that area that we refer to as the adjacency zone, which is administered by Belize which is sort of East of where the border lies. Within that one kilometer area, we have decided to go in accordance with the confident building measures that we will invite the OAS along with our Guatemalan counterparts to do a joint verification and for them also to come up with their findings. That joint verification was done on Monday. I am still waiting to get a copy of that report to see how it went. Whenever we receive that, we will certainly keep the public informed as to what action we will take going forward."

Daniel Ortiz
"Sir is the police, based on their investigation, suspecting at this time that the assailants who attacked Mr. Lambey may be of Guatemalan nationality?"

George Lovell, CEO, Ministry of National Security
"Yes that's the belief, and that's my belief too and that's the reason why we have engaged not just the OAS, but also the Guatemalans. because remember the OAS, you should engage them whenever there is an occurrence within that area, but Guatemalans, because we believe that it may well be people from that neighboring committee of Le Rejoya."
