Cleyon Clings To Life In Merida: He Needs Your Help To Survive
posted (April 13, 2016)

Cleyon Marage urgently needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. The surgery costs over $100,000 and his parents are pleading for financial assistance. 12 year old Cleyon has been on the news before.  He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2014. This type of leukemia attacks the bone marrow and produces cancerous cells. He has been in and out of the hospitals in Belize and in Merida, but with all that treatment, Cleyon relapsed in March this year. He is at a very critical stage and if he doesn’t get that bone marrow transplant as soon as possible – little Cleyon more than likely will not make it through. Today his stepfather came to our studio and first explained that things took a turn for the worse after Cleyon’s February Chemotherapy session.

Karick Garnett - Stepfather
"The last time he went February, he was good for approximately a month and right then and there after his health started to deteriorate. He started to get sick, he got weak and was vomiting for about 3 days and his mother got curious and she went to the clinic. They took a blood test and came back that his blood was low and she sent the information to the doctor in Merida. The doctor viewed the information and informed her that as soon as his blood is back up and he is able to travel to get him over there so that he could probably examine him and see what’s the problem; so he was at Karl Heusner Memorial for about a week and we get to the point where he couldn't want, his limbs were swollen, feet and thankfully his blood went back up and we were able to get some assistance and flew him over there because he wasn't able to travel on the bus. So he went over there and when he went over there the situation went from bad to worse. They gave him a stronger chemo because they stated that his body was immune to the chemo he was getting. The doctor explained that he had a 8% chance of surviving because of his health, his body started to deteriorate and gone from bad to worse; his lungs start failing, bleeding in his lungs. He had stomach problems, basically his whole body was just failing; start bleeding through his nose, his mouth, his ears and it was just rough. He went into life support as well."

But all hope is not lost for Cleyon, his health slowly began to improve a couple weeks ago and that is when the doctors from Merida said that Cleyon is strong enough to do a bone marrow transplant but they have to act now! Well 3 weeks have passed and they just can’t get all that money to do the surgery. Garnett told us more about this pivotal point in his stepson’s life.

Karick Garnett - Stepfather
"Things turn for the best and Cleon health started to improve. So I don't have no way to explain that but it is a miracle you know, people were praying for him and so forth and he started to improve and day by day started to improve. He got off life support, they took out the breathing tube and he starts eating. He is doing good at this time but when he went for the treatment the doctor stated that he will only have 3 weeks in order to take a bone marrow transplant in order for him to survive. The 3 weeks had passed so currently the doctor wants to give him more chemo which is another risk to take again and in order for him to extend his time in order for him to take the bone marrow transplant."

If you want to help Cleyon out, you can deposit money in either their Holy Redeemer Credit Union account number 52770 or Scotia Bank account number 9107868.
