Father Of Teen That Cops Killed Is Outraged
posted (April 18, 2016)
The death of 18 year old Hilberto Sotz in police custody on Caye Caulker isn't easy to forget. It was a dark episode for the police department, and prompted a spontaneous riot in the village.

Police acted quickly and charged two of their own for murder; Detective Leonardo Nunez and Constable Hallet King. But last week Friday, Much to the dismay of Hilberto Sotz's family those charges were reduced to manslaughter. Today Hilberto's father visited our studios to express his discontent with the way the court proceedings have been going. He is upset because the charges were reduced, but more so because the directive came from the DPP. Here's what he told us today:

Saturino Sotz, father of Hilberto Sotz
"How will he dropped it to manslaughter, as which this is murder and I have the evidence and he saying 'lack of evidence' he is telling lies. So that means to say he is a poling the police officers about corruption, the he needs to get charged too, because he is violating our rights. We put him here and we are paying him to at least protect us. So I want to know why they went to Supreme Court without summoned me or notify me, because I am the witness for my son. They never arrest my son by himself, they arrest him in my hands. That's why I warned the police officer Mr. Nunez, because when he stopped me, I humble my myself - I stopped and I told my son to go and see the man. When He grabbed my son, he grabbed him behind his pants and he dragged him. I told him "officer, please take care of my son." He told me "f*#$ you.""

"Why I told him to take care of my son is because the week after that, he told me, he went and look for my son and my son was in Baptist High School. He told me that I am hiding my son, he says 'when I catch you son, I will kill him.' that is what he told me and it happened on the 8th too. What kind of evidence the DPP wants? We are asking for the case to be reviewed and that the two officers will be remanded to prison until the case is closed."

Sotz said he is prepared to see this matter through to the end. And says he will not shy away from holding a protest or two, all in an effort to see that his son gets the justice that he deserves.
