Historic First: 60 Depart For N-O Jazzfest

Also leaving the country today was a 60-person contingent headed to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.  As we’ve been reporting, it’s one of the biggest music festivals in north America, and Belize has been invited to be the featured act at the cultural pavilion.

Now, it didn’t come together just like that; in fact, it took months of preparation, selection and organization.  And today they all boarded a flight headed for New Orleans.  That’s 50 musicians on a plane along with 8 craftsmen and women.  The organizers told us today that it’s a quantum leap unto the biggest stage ever for Belize:….

But putting it all together was no laughing matter!  That’s because more than a handful of the musicians and performers couldn’t get a visa.  That meant last minute substitutions and changes in lineup – which didn’t necessarily sit well with the organizers who run a tight ship:

The contingent flew out this afternoon, and should arrive in New Orlenas tonight. They start off performing tomorrow with TALLA WALLA vibrations Florencio MES SWEET PAIN AND the GARIFUNA COLELCTIVE.  This lineup will perform all weekend, while acts like Supa G and Bredda David perform on the second weekend.
