Room Dis-Service Hotel UCUM
posted (May 6, 2016)
About a month ago, we told you about a businessman and his family who became the victims of a terrifying extortion attempt in Chetumal. Well tonight, another Belizean is coming forward with her own bad experience.

She claims that over the Labour Day weekend she went to Chetumal, and she stayed at the popular Hotel Ucum. She says that she and her daughter went to enjoy themselves, after properly securing their room. When they came back, they found that the hotel staff hadn't only cleaned the room, they cleaned them out completely! That's right, they stole all their personal belongings.

She immediately reported it to the Mexican Police who investigated and came to the conclusion that it was not forced entry into their hotel room. Someone with a key, most likely a hotel staffer, went in, and stole their belongings.

Here's her account:

"Where were you staying? When was this and what happened?"

Victim
"I was staying at the Hotel Ucum, the one by the old market and I booked into the hotel on Saturday, April 30th. On Sunday, May the 1st I went out to Bacalar to the beach. When I came back around 6:30 or quarter to 7, I went upstairs and I found my belongings, especially the bag that I had my clothes in, weren't there. My clothing was on the bed and when I looked around the room was so clean. I continued observing, my stuff that I had packed already, the groceries that I bought from Saturday, it was not there. I had a gold chain hanged on the door knob, it was not there so what I did was just turn around and went downstairs. My daughter followed me and I reported it to the receptionist saying that somebody went into my room to clean up and I realized they didn't really clean up but clean out the stuff that I had in my room."

"So you're saying they stole from you?"

Victim
"They stole from me. My advice to the Belizean people, I guess you need to be very cautious because at Hotel Ucum, when they go in to clean your room they are not only cleaning your room but searching your stuff. They are watching us that we're just carefree and apparently in my case I didn't have so much things so that I had to just dig for this or that. I just stood there, observed and realized at the Hotel Ucum they have stolen my things."

She tells us that she will be following up closely with the Mexican police about the theft, and she hopes to take legal action against the hotel for her missing items.
