Woes For Sandhill Mother of Three
posted (May 9, 2016)
A woman and her kids spent Mother's Day in a desperate search for a place to stay after their house was destroyed in a fire. 35 year old Sandhill resident Kafi Davis went to spend Mother's Day in Corozal. But her weekend plans were cut short when she got the call about her burnt house. She and her kids lost everything, and she suspects it was triggered by a domestic dispute. Courtney Weatherburne went to SandHill to find out more:

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
This morning, a small flame still danced among the scorched debris where Kafi Davis's house used to be.

Davis moved from Lords Bank to live here on her mother in law's land in Sandhill. She lived with her husband and 3 kids. But during their 9 years of marriage, she said they have been through a lot and he just recently moved out of the house.

"We just could not see eye to eye because of his alcohol abuse. We've been together almost 10 years, 9 years. In that 9 years we had a lot of difficulties, a lot of ups and downs like a rollercoaster ride."

According to Davis all those "up's and down's" are what led to her house being burnt down early Sunday morning, luckily neither she nor the kids were in the house.

"I was not here; I was in Corozal. On Saturday afternoon I left on a bus and Sunday morning around 10:30, I got a call from my neighbor and she told me that my house was burnt down."

"I wasn't up I was sleeping. In the morning when I got up I saw the house burning down. How can that happen? Because things like that don't usually happen around this place."

Courtney Weatherburne
"No one saw who came or what happened, how the fire started?"

Luis Montoya, Neighbour
"No we didn't see anything like that."

3 kids are left homeless and Davis is pleading for shelter and justice.

"I'm just devastated because I lost everything. The children cannot go to school right now because their uniforms, books, foot-wear and everything got destroyed in the fire. Basically why I'm doing this interview is to kindly ask for some assistance from the public and the area representative which is Minister Castro. Also from the housing and lands department if possible so that I can get a piece of land and try and get some assistance in getting another house built."

Courtney Weatherburne
"So apart from assistance, you also want justice?"

Kafi Davis, House Burnt Down
"Yes ma'am I certainly do because we are not been seeing eye to eye but at the end of the day the children and I are left homeless."

Davis and her kids are staying at relatives in Belize City. If you would like to help Davis you can call her at 633 - 5572. She told us she has lost about $20,000 worth of items in the fire.

Davis believes that it was arson triggered by an ongoing domestic dispute, but Police say they have no evidence to establish arson at this time.
